An installation and enactment of 3 Scores & The People’s Mic Khutba / 3 Partituras Y La Mic Khutba De La Gente occurred at Performance Space New York, as part of Tiona Nekkia McClodden’s performative installation CLUB. 3 Scores and The People’s Mic Khutba draws from institutional and personal archives of prayer books and religious manuals as well as vernacular practices that are not scored. The book includes transliterations and translations in English, Urdu, and Arabic with an iteration in Puerto Rican inflected Spanish, Urdu and Arabic produced for this installation in the Lower East Side.
3 Scores & The People’s Mic Khutba / 3 Partituras Y La Mic Khutba De La Gente is a book of scores that includes a Friday khutba. It responds to social life under conditions of siege, imprisonment, disappearance, deportation and surveillance of friends, families, lovers and strangers. Bodies standing, sitting, kneeling, suspended, stripped and strapped down, at rest and restless, side by side and in solitary, in moments of debility and disability are this work's conditions of possibility. These scores are animated by the sounds of prayer, chants, recitations, cries, and hands striking flesh but also by whispers and silences that give way to breath and breathlessness. We score a manual for the already there, and imagine how we might gather and speak aloud and together.
The scores are the basis for a series of installations and performances, some without audiences, at multiple sites across the world.
